Our missionaries will ground us in the faithfulness of God as we hear how he is bringing people from many nations to see Christ clearly. The conference seeks to train up leaders and future leaders in the churches of the SW. It also seeks to encourage people in their ministries and to stay in the SW for the sake of the Gospel. I will be in Sydney on February 22 and would love to meet you for an informal drop-in event at the Reformers Bookshop! There will be questions and answers, refreshments and giveaways, and, of course, books! In 2 Timothy 4, Paul lays a series of powerful charges to the younger Timothy that boil down to this: stand firm. One of the greatest needs of the church in the West today is gospel-resilience in every area of life. Life can be wearisome. What is sleep, and what is rest, according to the Bible? He will help equip us to critique biblically our own assumptions and practices as incessantly busy and perhaps rest-deprived Christians in a restless culture. The PTC is delighted to be holding our annual Ministry Conference in March of 2018, welcoming David Cook, Alasdair Paine and David Jones to teach us. We will be focusing on the books of Philipians and Titus, as well as learning how to read the bible and preach it faithfully, preparing us for the realities of life in ministry. Is our quest for travel harmful or helpful for Christian life? Does the Bible guide us about whether Christians should travel? Stephen Liggins — an author, pastor, traveller and SMBC visiting lecturer — helps us think wisely and biblically about the what, why and how of overseas travel for Christians. Practical advice about how to plan ahead to make our time overseas a benefit, not a peril, for our spiritual life. What makes the West the West? Rule of law, humanism, the Scientific Revolution, democracy, human rights — were they as inevitable as we like to think? Learning to preach is a lifelong work. For those in full-time ministry there is little opportunity for informed feedback and fine-tuning of your sermons. SMBC is offering a three day preaching workshop with David Cook and Alasdair Paine. Both David and Alasdair are experienced in pastoral ministry and know the pressures of preaching regularly. This is an opportunity to step outside of your normal routine for a few days of personalised input on your preaching. Places are limited to 30 people only for this very hands-on workshop, so register early to avoid disappointment! Join with us for a very special day of learning, questioning, resourcing, and upskilling for the call to leadership. Then become part of a leadership network of conversation and practical help. We are created to shape the world. In a fast paced, technology-laden world where outrage and conflict are quick responses, it is easy to become a spectator… or to be overwhelmed and step back. The world needs leaders with character and confidence to step up. This one-day conference seeks to equip you for leadership that is wise, courageous, and compassionate. In many ways, Pope Francis appears as a reformer: a breath of fresh air in the Roman Catholic Church. He engages intentionally with the world and its leaders. Rachel Ciano, an SMBC church history lecturer, will consider this possibility. What does leadership in the workplace look like today? The way we work has changed dramatically in the past decade. More people are employed in non-traditional industries, working flexible hours and using technology to work anywhere. Expectations of leaders have become a moving target and it is hard to know how to lead and who to follow in this new era. Come along to The Edge to hear from two leaders who have had to learn how to adapt to this ever-changing environment. If the Law was for the old covenant people of God, how are Christians to relate to it as we live by grace and the gospel? Jesus seemed to set the Law aside; yet he was also very positive about it. Is it still relevant, and are we required to keep the Ten Commandments? Or even the whole Old Testament law? We will explore these questions with Kit Barker, who teaches Old Testament at SMBC. Psychologists, counsellors and others criticise this, seeing it as an excuse for perpetrating domestic violence, and for victims to patiently endure that. Sandy Grant, who pastors in Wollongong, will explore this biblically and pastorally, suggesting appropriate ways for Christians and church leaders to think and behave, and to identify and help abuse victims. There we find the joy to endure with thanksgiving as we journey to the promised land together. When it comes to the gospel and conversion to Christ, how should a new believer in a religiously hostile culture live and worship? What does becoming all things to all people 1 Corinthians 9 look like for both missionaries and new believers in contexts like this? In a world that tries to pulls us away from God, what are the key things we can do which will help establish in children a faith that is deep and strong — a faith that will weather the storms — a faith that lasts a lifetime? How can the church regain a foothold in cities that have largely dismissed Christianity? How can churches thrive when pews are empty and morale is low? How can everyday Christians be reenergised with a passionate love for the lost? Only by saturating the city with Christians and communities saturated by the Gospel. Most of us spend 95% of our waking hours outside church. We work to support ourselves and others; we study; we do chores around our homes; we care for parents, children and others. How does God regard all that busy worldly activity? How can the church regain a foothold in cities that have largely dismissed Christianity? How can churches thrive when pews are empty and morale is low? How can everyday Christians be reenergised with a passionate love for the lost? IDMC Conference 2018 re-examines the true essentials of discipleship of Jesus — discipleship as a redemptive journey — moving us from our self-efforts to the finished work that is in Christ. It is in rethinking the way of discipleship that we can be freed from our self-striving to a discipleship born of gratitude. It is in understanding and grasping what He has done for us that we will be able to do what He desires of us. Over 60 organisations have reps to chat with about what their mission is involved in and where, and how one can be involved as a goer or sender.
